Drowning prevention demands urgent policy advocacy, particularly in Nepal, where it remains a silent yet leading cause of death among children. The statistics are stark: Nepal has the third highest age-standardized drowning death rate in South East Asia, with over half of the fatalities occurring among individuals under 20 years of age, and rivers accounting for nearly 80% of drowning incidents. Despite being preventable, drowning often lacks the attention it needs, with limited adoption of safety measures such as lifejacket use, proper supervision, and water safety education. The NIRI Unit for Prevention and Life-Saving Activities (NPLSA) is committed to addressing this critical issue through focused advocacy. NPLSA aims to bring the gravity of drowning to the attention of lawmakers, urging the implementation of evidence-based strategies aligned with the United Nations Resolution on Drowning Prevention (2021). By engaging policymakers, raising public awareness, and integrating drowning prevention into health and safety policies, NPLSA seeks to mobilize coordinated efforts from government agencies, non-profits, and local communities. This approach is vital to fostering sustainable action that will reduce Nepal’s drowning burden and save countless lives.
